HLTH 1 Intro to Personal Health 3.00 Units
An exploration of major health issues and behaviors in the various dimensions of health (physical, emotional, intellectual/mental, social, spiritual, and environmental). Emphasis is placed on individual responsibility for personal health and the promotion of informed, positive health behaviors. Topics include psychological health, mental health, stress management, nutrition, exercise, weight management, chronic and infectious diseases, healthy relationships, sexual health, drug use and misuse, aging, and the health care system.

Physiological, psychological, social, cultural, and political influences on women's health. Emphasis on diversity of women's experiences and the factors involved with both population level health outcomes and personal decision-making. Focus on empowerment for primary prevention.

HLTH 7 Introduction to Public Health 3.00 Units
An introduction to the discipline of Public Health including basic concepts and terminologies of public health, as well as the history and accomplishments of public health professionals and agencies. An overview of the functions of various public health professions and institutions, and an in-depth examination of the core public health disciplines will be covered. Topics include epidemiology of infectious and chronic diseases; prevention and control of diseases in the community; analysis of the social determinants of health; health disparities among various populations; strategies for disease reduction; community organizing and health promotion programming; environmental health and safety; global health; and healthcare policy. Terminology used typically by the medical profession; explanation of the history of terminology, prefixes, suffixes, and root words; emphasis on spelling, definitions, pronunciation, and an understanding of their meanings; includes medical abbreviations, anatomical, disease, diagnostic, medical, surgical, and additional terms as they relate to each body system.

HLTH 51B Disease Proc/Adv Med Term 4.00 Units
Introduction to the nature of disease and to structural and functional changes of diseases as they affect the systems of the body; discussion of causes, symptoms and treatment of disease. Prerequisite: Health 51A (completed with a grade of "C" or higher).

HLTH 60 Responding to Emergencies 1.00 Unit
Development of knowledge and skills for recognizing and caring for emergency situations. Include healthy and prevention of illness and injury. Designed to meet the needs of individuals in the community who frequently provide First Aid. Successful completion of the knowledge and skills tests qualifies for a National Safety Council First Aid and Adult CPR card.
